Pakistan U19 vs Bangladesh U19 Warm-Up Match Abandoned After Rain Interruptions

Pakistan U19 vs Bangladesh U19 Warm-Up Match Abandoned After Rain Interruptions

In a highly anticipated ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup 2026 warm-up fixture, Pakistan U19 faced Bangladesh U19 at the Masvingo Sports Club in Zimbabwe, but persistent rain forced the match to be abandoned without a result. The fixture, played on January 10, 2026, provided promising moments for both sides before weather conditions ultimately ended competition prematurely, forcing teams to regroup as they head into the main tournament.

The warm-up match was an important part of preparations for both teams, who are set to compete in the 16-team ICC U19 Men’s World Cup taking place across Namibia and Zimbabwe from January 15 to February 6, 2026. Pakistan U19, led by captain Farhan Yousaf, had opted to field first after winning the toss, hoping to put early pressure on the Bangladesh batting line-up and exploit bowling conditions before the forecasted rain.

Pakistan Bowling Attack Shines Despite Weather

Pakistan’s bowling unit delivered disciplined spells early in the match, with right-arm fast bowler Ali Raza emerging as the standout performer. Raza struck twice in his opening over, quickly dismissing Zawad Abrar and Rifat Beg, reducing Bangladesh to 10 for 2 within the first few overs. His early breakthroughs set the tone for Pakistan’s bowlers, as the visitors struggled to build momentum under overcast skies and damp pitch conditions.

Soon after, Umar Zaib added to the visitors’ woes by dismissing Bangladesh captain Azizul Hakim, leaving them reeling at 12 for 3. Additional contributions came from Mohammad Sayyam, Momin Qamar, and Usman Khan, each chipping in with a wicket to keep Bangladesh under control. Raza later returned to remove wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Abdullah, completing his impressive three-wicket haul for figures of 3/34 in his five overs.

Despite the early swing in favor of Pakistan’s bowlers, Bangladesh’s middle order showed resilience. Kalam Siddiki anchored the innings with a determined and patient knock, finishing 71 not out off 98 balls and providing valuable stability as his side navigated through the bowling challenge. His innings included six boundaries and kept Bangladesh competitive in the contest before weather conditions worsened.

Rain Disrupts Play and Forces Abandonment

Throughout the afternoon, rain interrupted play at regular intervals, making conditions increasingly challenging for players on both sides. Ground staff attempted to manage the outfield as showers persisted, but the intensity and frequency of the rain made it difficult to resume competitive cricket. Play was halted several times, with both teams waiting in the hope that conditions might improve.

By the time the match reached 36.3 overs, Bangladesh was positioned at 152 for 7, with Siddiki leading from the front. However, as the rain continued unabated and the playing surface became unsafe, match officials had no choice but to call the game off, declaring no result under the ICC’s playing conditions.

While neither team could secure a win, there were positives to take from the contest. Pakistan’s bowling attack demonstrated depth and discipline, crucial attributes as they prepare for the competitive pressures of the World Cup. Bangladesh, meanwhile, showed grit in their middle order, with Siddiki’s innings providing a glimpse of their batting potential.

Players React to the Weather-Affected Contest

Speaking to PCB Digital after the match, Ali Raza reflected on his performance and the challenges posed by the weather. He acknowledged working closely with the bowling coach during recent tri-series action, which boosted his confidence and helped him execute his plans effectively. Raza described the conditions as difficult due to the rain, but expressed personal satisfaction with how he adapted and contributed to his team’s effort before the washout.

“We have won two tournaments recently,” Raza commented, referring to Pakistan U19’s strong form in preceding series. “The entire team put in a lot of effort, everyone is confident and we will give our best in the World Cup.” His comments underscored Pakistan’s positive mindset going into the main competition, despite the anticlimactic end to this warm-up fixture.

What’s Next for Pakistan U19

With the warm-up match behind them, Pakistan U19 will now turn their attention to their next preparation fixture against USA U19, scheduled to take place in Bulawayo on Tuesday, January 13. This clash will offer another chance for both teams to fine-tune their strategies and build momentum ahead of the World Cup.

Pakistan U19 have been drawn in Group C for the ICC U19 World Cup, where they will face England in their opening match on January 16 at the Takashinga Sports Club in Harare, followed by games against Scotland and Zimbabwe on January 19 and 22, respectively.
